Boat Know How’s Beginnings

Boat Know How Web Publishing came about through a lifetime of enjoyment on the sea, pottering about on boats!

The resources are a culmination of vast personal experiences and tips from both professional and pleasure skippers & crews as well as published marine data.

The flexibility as to how this resource can be used is a reflection of the manner in which it was compiled.

It is from these humble beginnings that a series of Trip Packs emerged that ultimately gave birth to this concise and practical form of reference.

Boat Know How Web Publishing is a provider of digital marine information and educational resources.

The Boat Know How Cruising Guide is easily accessible and a practical resource for marine leisure users.

The emphasis is not on “what to do” but reflects what experienced skippers “actually do” in preparation and application.

The format is simple and logical and perfectly suited to the purpose of being used on passage.

Passage Planning & Short Hop Trip Packs parameters and scope

PASSAGE PLANNING TRIP PACKS

The Passage Planning Trip Packs offer a Resource, which contain most of the technical information necessary to complete a personal passage plan.

The routing waypoints are placed, whenever practical, to make use of positioned navigational aids or geographical features that provide useful transit or clearing marks.

A Trip Pack needs only to be supplemented with tide tables, tidal stream atlas, lock/flap gate openings and weather information etc to have a complete passage plan.

All destinations included in a Passage Planning Trip Pack offer shelter and a level of facilities that a cruising family or group of friends are most likely to require when planning a holiday or summer cruise.

Given the varied weather conditions experienced in the British Isles and nearby French coast, the Passage Planning Trip Packs only include destinations that offer secure all weather facilities.

SHORT HOP TRIP PACKS

Many skippers enjoy a short hop to a nearby destination for a lunch or night stopover as they track along a coastline.

Because such destinations have limitations as to the level of shelter or onshore access to facilities, they are published as Short Hops Trip Packs.

The Short Hop Trip Packs are not as detailed as the Passage Planning Trip Packs and may require skippers to seek out local knowledge and a detailed Pilotage Guide of the area.
